Access to Archive (a2a)

The Access to Archive database contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England and dating from the 900s to the present day.

Doing a general search for Roche returned 434 catalogues each of which had one or more hits.

General Register Office for Scotland

You can search for your scottish ancestors at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

The oldest Roche Marriage record they have is in 1609 and the earliest christening/birth in 1610 and the earliest death record in 1855.

UK's National Archives: Other Info

UK's National Archives has the 1901 census - you can search for people and buy their details.

Also available are Migration records (Moving Here), Equity Pleadings and lots of other databases/archives.

UK's National Archives: Roche Wills

I searched through the National Archive Wills and found one Will of interest:

Will of Martine Roche, Merchant of Surat, East Indies.
Date: 28 July 1631.
Catalogue reference: PROB 11/160.
Dept: Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury
Series: Prerogative Court of Canterbury and related Probate Jurisdictions: Will Registers
Piece: Name of Register: St. John Quire Numbers: 69 - 138

Thats makes him the earliest Roche I know of in India!! (The previous date was early 1800!)

On doing a fuzzy search I found another record:
Will of Richard Rocke of Calcutta in the Province of Bengal , East Indies
Date: 10 January 1824
Catalogue reference" PROB 11/1680
Dept: Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury
Series: Prerogative Court of Canterbury and related Probate Jurisdictions: Will Registers
Piece: Name of Register: Erskine Quire Numbers: 1 - 50

I have seen records of this person and initially had thought that it was a spelling error; but have seen too many mentions of his name to think that its an error. The oldest reference to his name was probably in the Bengal Almanac, 1820.

The oldest Roche Will there was -
Will of John Roche, Draper of Taunton, Somerset
Date: 26 November 1494
Catalogue reference: PROB 11/10
Dept: Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury

Some other results from fuzzy search:
Will of Emanuell or Emanuel De Roch, Mariner and now belonging to the Honorable United East India Company's Ship Houghton

UK's National Archives: Wills

UK's National Archives is online and allows you to search for Wills - an important source for Genealogy.

The introduction of wills on the site gives information on what info can be gleamed from the Wills.

I searched for Roche in the period 1700 to 1800 and found more than 40 of them.

I searched for Mangalore (without the ROCHE) and found six of them:

1. Will of George Johnson, now belonging to the good Ship Bengal Merchant now riding in the Road of Mangalore on the Coast of East India 23 September 1689

2. Will of Thomas Nasbitt, Mariner now on board and belonging to the good Ship Bengal, Merchant now riding on the Road of Mangalore on the Coast of East India 30 August 1689

3. Will of James Welsh, Lieutenant 42nd Regiment of Foot at Mangalore but on Board the East India Merchant Ship King George 25 August 1786

John D Roche

There's a query on CousinConnect about John D Roche:

"John D. Roche was born in Cork County (either Castletownroche or Charleville)in the year 1794. John D.'s father was named Thomas. John d.married Ellen Kelley. They sailed from Ireland (supposedly) 1823 and arrived in Canada but later moved to the state of Illinois and settled in an area later to be named "Saint Augustine" after the church which he and others built in that area."
Date Posted: 28-Aug-2003

There is another post by the same person:
"Looking for T. W. Roach or his death place. Kin to William S. Roach. William was born in Macomb, Illinois - 1950 and died in Redlands California on March 01, 1950."

Roche Clan

eclecticscotland have a page on Roche. This is what it says -

The Roches originally came from Flanders, then emigrated to Pembrokeshire in Wales, before three of the family - David, Adam and Henry de la Roch - joined Strongbow in the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. At Glanworth, near Fermoy in Co. Cork, can be seen the ruins of a Roche castle destroyed by Cromwellian forces in the 17th century. West of Glanworth is the attractive village of Castletownroche, which derives its name from another Roche settlement. A more complete Roche castle can be seen in Co. Wexfordóthe Norman castle at Ferrycarrig, now the location of the Irish National Heritage Park. In all there are sixteen Rochestowns in Ireland and innumerable Roche castles.

Anthony J. Roche's Genealogy Pages

Anthony J. Roche's has a site on Roche Genealogy - that for the descendents of James Roche - who was originally from Co Waterford and later settled in Dublin.

The site contains the Index of Roche Births in Ireland for the years 1864, 1865, 1867 and 1870.

Mill's History of India

Mill's History of India is available online - all six volumes (pdf/html). The first volume is 300 odd pages ... so will take a long time to have a look at them. There will definitely be interesting stuff there.

Apart from this, the Online Library of Liberty a lot of other historical books.

Unfortunately, searching for India returns all of books - since they have the text "(Indianapolis: Liberty Fund, 2000)" after the author of the foreword!!!

Internet Indian History Sourcebook

The Internet Indian History Sourcebook is part of the Internet Modern History Sourcebook. The Sourcebook is a collection of public domain and copy-permitted texts for introductory level classes in modern European and World history.

It has a section on The Western Intrusion. Looks pretty informative. Gotta go through them.

Google WebAlerts - Roche Sites

I got a mail from Google Web Alerts for the Web Alerts I had set up for Roche Genealogy.

It had one link - for Ancestor Guide: Roche Genealogy and Surname Search.

This page did not contain any information but, as the name suggests, had links to other pages (including searches). Some of the links went nowhere (404), some to paid sites and some had nothing to do with the Roche family! Some links looked familiar, so I must have visted them long back - and they should be there in my bookmarks. [That reminds me, I need to slowly document those sites here].

A few interesting sites -

Family Genealogy Sites

1. Baumert - La Roche Genealogy
This site is a work in progress (WIP). It contains only a list of surnames - La Roche being one amongst them.

2. Martin Family Page
Contains a list of descendents of William Roche (June 1840 - July 03, 1877)

3. Patricia's Timeless Connections
This is an old site - I've been here before (a long time ago) - the leaves icons are the same as before.
It has a section on the de la Roche/Roche family. It mentions 12 Roche's from 1812 to 1986.

4. Cray Regis Bauxmont-Flynn's Genealogy
It mentions 2 de la Roche's - Claudine de la Roche (b. 29-Jan-1921, South Africa) and George T. de la Roche (13-Mar-1866, Pietermatriztburg, SA to 5-Mar-1938, Koppies, SA).

5. Peddy Genealogy
Site for the PEDDY surname genealogy.
Mentions a Philip Roche -
Hannah PEDDY married Feb 9 1791 in Craven Co NC Philip ROCHE, John Mansfield was the bondsman & Saml Chapman was the witness.

6. Raymond Schad's Genealogy Site
A WIP. Mentions the Surname De Roche.

7. Bella Bindy's Family page
Mentions one Roche - Roche, Terence John who married Risely, Rhonda Christine

Michael Quin-Conroy

Michael Quin-Conroy just posted his website and research interests on the India-L list. The name rings a bell - so either I might have helped him in some genealogical lookup or he might have helped me.

He has placed the BMD raw data from his research on his site.

The British Empire Website

There is a website called The British Empire. You can find lots of information of the colonial period there - from timelines, maps, articles, campaigns ...

[No, no Roche there]

The Age of Nelson

The Age of Nelson is a databases covering the Royal Navy officers who fought in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars 1793-1815, and the seamen and marines who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Out of habit I searched for Roche's there and found a few -

from commissioned sea officers of the Napoleonic wars:

ROACH, Lieutenant Faulknor (d. 1787)
ROACH, Lieutenant George (nl 1814)
ROCHE, Lieutenant Hugh
ROCHE, Commander (Rtd) John (d. 1848)
ROCHE, Captain Joseph (d. 1863)
ROCH, Lieutenant Mark (nl 1800)

from the men who fought at Trafalgar:

Colonial and Post Colonial Literary Dialogues

Through not a strictly Genealogical site, this site will give some insight into the cultural aspects.

It's created by the students and faculty at Western Michigan University.

"A resource for students, scholars, and teachers of
postcolonial and multicultural approaches
to British and world literature."

From the Indian perspective - Etymology of Selected Words of Indian Language Origin - would be of interest.

Google Labs News: Site-Flavored Google Search.

This allows you to do personalized search. You can specify the categories that the topic you are searching is in.

This is a feature I was waiting for a long time. Whenever I search for "Roche" in google (or any other search engine) I used to get more sites on the company Roche, or news articles on it - but what I need was genealogical information and not a company information! This was something that people in the XML circles have been touting since the beginning, though I didn't see much come out of it.

So now I can specify my categories and generate a html that would ideally return you the results that you want. I tried it for genealogy, but didn't get what I expected.

I used these categories -

Home -> Family
Society -> Genealogy
Society -> History
Society -> Military

[If you are researching a specific region, you can add that too]

Google

There was only one site flavored result on searching for Roche! This will take time to build up, I assume.

Roche Family on Google Groups

I created a group for the ROCHE/RO(A)CH(E) family genealogy at Google Groups. Unfortunately it did not allow me to keep the group name as Roche, so I kept it as RocheFamily.

Google Labs News: Web Alerts.

"Google Web Alerts are sent by email when there is new information on the web matching the search you specify."

You just enter a search term, your email address and the frequency at which you want to be notified. A nice way to keep track of new web pages on a specific topic.

I added an alert on "Roche Genealogy". Lets see how it works.

Internet Library of Early Journals

The Internet Library of Early Journals has these journals online -

Annual Register - 1758 to 1778
Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine - 1843 to 1863
Gentleman's Magazine - 1731 to 1750
Notes and Queries - 1849 to 1869
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society - 1757 to 1777
The Builder - 1843 to 1852

They have a search facility for all but two of these journals. You can also browse the journals - each of whose pages are presented as images. So after searching you need to search for the term within the image! Also, the AND option of the search doesn't seem to work. You can always check out the index in the journals.

3D Tree

Found a link to this project Arbre on orkut. It seems to render a gedcom file in 3D. Unfotunately the site is in French ...

Mariners web site

In the previous post I posted a link from the Mariners web site. Well, they have a section on the East India Company.

It has a nice introduction to the EIC (a single paragraph!). It has a roster of names, but no Roche on it.

Merchant Vessels in the Service of the East India Company, 1601-1832

This Merchant Vessels site has an alphabetic list of the Merchant Vessels in the Service of the East India Company from 1601-1832. It gives the tonnage, number of voyages and the period of service for each of the vessels.

Good information if you're looking for a specific ship. But there are no passenger lists on this site.

India-L mailing list

I rejoined the India-L mailing list at RootsWeb after a gap of five years.

I had initially joined the list in around 1996 - when it was a smaller group. Its grown since then.

The Times Archive

The good ppl at this site have placed The Times Digital Archive online. You just need the trial id. Its a rich source of historic and genealogical information.

Census & Genealogy

I had posted this earlier.

Ok, the census site does have a genealogy section.

They have a name distribution file which gives the frequency of surnames and names in the 1990 census.

Coat of Arms in SVG

I had posted this earlier.

Sodipodi has a few civic coat of arms in svg.

If you want to see more of these (images though), check out International Civic Heraldry.

Wonder if any family coat of arms are available in svg - would surely of interest to me, as a genealogist.

Preamble

Roche Family Genealogy.

I've been doing Genealogy research for over a decade now. I'm mainly researching the Roche Family in India, but am also interested in the Roche family in other parts of the world.

I plan to post information about my research, and other genealogical information as and when I hear about it, here.

cheers
Conrad
